My favorite expansion was Island Paradise, but I haven't found one good map for that expansion except the default EA map with houseboats and islands (btw can pets, mostly horses travel across water?). Not to mention it was probably the biggest world I've ever played in tons of houses and families. My favorite part was playing with purple and green skin colored sims that was interesting. (Replacing both the lots I mentioned fixed them and I was using V3, but I also don't have World Adventures.) I'd see my sim and others bobbing for apples or sitting on air but I couldn't tell my sim to do that. Also at the Seasons festival square, some items were invisible and unusable except through the sims own free will. For example I was training horses and the default horse training community lot didn't work, I'd start training then the action would be canceled before they horse started running. I had to replace some of the community lots with EA lots of the same type and there was one building that was completely blacked out and impossible to use so I just deleted it. These expansion packs are also available in Sims 4.I've used Union Cove and while I really liked it better than any EA world it seemed kinda glitchy. All of them bring in a charm of their own, making the game more delightful. These are all the EPs and SPs you need to know about in Sims 3 expansion packs to make a wise decision.
